Nasionalisme Inggris dan Kekerasan Berbasis Kebencian terhadap Muslim Studi Kasus English Defence League

Abstract

Bangkitnya nasionalisme Inggris telah dicatat dan diteliti secara baik sejak dekade 1990-an, terlebih pasca-hasil Brexit, dengan catatan mengenai identitas Inggris yang mengambil bentuk ketidakamanan finansial, nostalgia atas masa lalu imperial, xenofobia, dan anti-elitisme. Pada waktu yang sama, kekerasan berbasis kebencianterhadap komunitas Muslim di berbagai kawasan Inggris juga telah diarsipkan dan dikaji dengan baik, dengan penjelasan mengenai motif pelaku mengarah pada penemuan individu-individu yang terperangkap dalam ketidakpercayaan mendalam terhadap non-Inggris dan ketakutan akan kehilangan identitasnya sebagai orang Inggris. Meskipun kedua fenomena ini memiliki fitur-fitur yang sangat mirip, jarang ditemukan penjelasan yang mengarah pada usaha untuk menghubungkan kedua fenomena kontemporer di lanskap identitas politik Inggris ini. Menggunakan contoh English Defence League yang sangat kontroversial serta pemimpinnya Tommy Robinson pada puncak aktivitas mereka di akhir dekade pertama abad ke-21, kami menemukan bahwa terdapat setidaknya korelasi kuat antara kedua fenomena dan kemungkinan nasionalisme Inggris sebagai salah satu penyebab penting yang secara langsung mengarah kepada kejadian-kejadian kejahatan berbasis kebencian untuk kaum minoritas di Inggris.
